What Makes a Wine Kosher? Inside Our Reserve Kosher Cabernet Sauvignon

Posted by ONEHOPE Winery on

Wine has held an important place in Jewish tradition for centuries, from Shabbat and holiday celebrations to Passover and other holiday celebrations. Our Reserve Kosher Cabernet Sauvignon brings that tradition to Napa Valley, pairing the character of cabernet sauvignon with the specialized winemaking practices required to produce kosher wine.

Grown in St. Helena, Napa Valley, this cabernet sauvignon offers notes of dried fruit, cranberry, juniper and chocolate, with herbal undertones.

What Makes Wine Kosher?

The grapes themselves are not what distinguish kosher wine. Instead, the difference lies primarily in how the wine is produced and handled.

For our Reserve Kosher Cabernet Sauvignon, our winemaking team oversees the harvest and delivery of the fruit to the winery. Once the grapes arrive, a dedicated Sabbath observant Jewish kosher team takes over, handling the fruit and wine throughout the winemaking process under kosher supervision. Ingredients and processing aids must also meet applicable kosher requirements.

From there, the winemaking follows a familiar path. The cabernet sauvignon grapes are crushed and fermented, with the skins contributing color, tannin and flavor before the wine moves through aging and eventually bottling. What distinguishes the process is the careful kosher handling and supervision that accompanies each stage.

A Modern Approach to Kosher Winemaking

During production, the wine undergoes a modern flash heating process, in which it is heated briefly and quickly cooled to minimize the impact on the character of the wine. While heat is used during this process, our Reserve Kosher Cabernet Sauvignon is classified as non mevushal.

The distinction is important because flash heating does not universally determine whether a wine is considered mevushal. Kosher authorities have different standards regarding the temperature, duration and effect of heating required for that designation. Our kosher team therefore continues to oversee and handle the wine throughout the winemaking process.

Reserve Kosher Cabernet Sauvignon

Our Reserve Kosher Cabernet Sauvignon brings these traditions together with Napa Valley winemaking. This bold & structured cabernet sauvignon pairs beautifully with beef brisket, fire roasted eggplant, mushroom ragù and dark chocolate.

For Passover, serve it alongside a hearty chicken dish or beef brisket, or open a bottle for Shabbat and other celebrations throughout the year.
